Typically, sod takes about 2 to 3 weeks to firmly establish its roots in your lawn. During this period, it's crucial to water the sod adequately and avoid heavy foot traffic to ensure successful root establishment.
New sod requires frequent watering to foster root growth. For the first week, it's recommended to water the sod twice a day—morning and late afternoon—to keep it moist. After the first week, you can gradually reduce watering to once every other day and then to just twice a week as the sod starts to establish. Always adjust based on weather conditions and soil moisture.
Installing sod over existing grass is not recommended. For the best results, the old lawn should be thoroughly removed, and the soil should be prepared before laying new sod. This preparation includes clearing debris, leveling the ground, and adding a fresh topsoil layer if necessary. This ensures that the new sod makes direct contact with the soil, which is crucial for root development.
The ideal time for sod installation largely depends on your climate. Generally, spring and early fall are the best times to install sod in most climates because the weather is cooler and there is usually more natural rainfall. These conditions help the sod root quickly without the stress of extreme heat or cold.
It's best to wait until the sod has rooted into the soil before mowing it for the first time. This usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks. You can test if the sod has rooted by gently lifting a corner of a sod piece; if it feels anchored and does not lift easily, it's likely rooted. Make sure your mower blades are sharp and set the mower to a higher setting to avoid cutting the grass too short and stressing the new lawn.
